School Holidays are here for some

Well the begining of February is the start of some school holidays, especially the North of France.

Conditions are great with a fresh 40cm having fallen over the past days and more due this week.

A word of warning if you are out there there are lots of different snow types just now, having been mild, cold, misty and snowy conditions are variable. The conditions are just right for avalanches, not a funny thing, the chunks of snow that fall in an avalanche can be like blocks of concrete… I have seen one or two close up and you can’t believe the chunks, so take care and stay on pisted/managed areas. In Haute Savoie the deaths on the mountains here hardly make the headlines as so many! Think of that when you think its just soft snow falling when avalanching.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Just a note when you are here and perhaps have an injury, remember there is research to prove that soft tissue injuries (eg ligaments, muscles, tendons etc), are healed much quicker, the quicker you have physio…. research to prove!…http://www.iscp.ie/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=577&Itemid=483 so if no one suggests physio for you give me a call on 00 33 673 03 73 53, there is always something can be done to help speed recovery/alleviate symptoms.

Snow types

If you are about to ski in and around Les Gets, for those of you maybe not so experienced and the experienced, remember that the Eskimos have I think 26 words for “snow”! In otherwords there are so many different textures/types of snow, with varying temperatures you can have a change in snow from powder to heavy snow within 50m. So what I hear you say, well in fact we ski differently in each type of snow and our bodies adapt very quickly with experience, if you get it wrong it can mean the difference between knee traumas/falls or not, especially when you hit the heavy stuff! Keep an eye out for how many diffrent qualities of snow you find in your holiday.

Sports Massages

I have recently had a lot of sports massages to do and two questions come into mind; firstly, why to people think a sports massage which does not cause a huge amount of pain is not effective? Secondly, why do people ask for deep as possible massages (with pain it seems)?

I am trained in sports massage, we were taught the goal should certainly be to get to the full depth of the muscle in order to ease it, however, we were not taught necessarily to inflict unnecessairy pain for the sake of pain. I can feel when at the bottom of a muscle, whether or not there is a thickened area or knot, so why should I have to force extra pain because the client demands it? The experience and knowledge is to know and feel the difference between clients, obviously no one ever has the same muscle bulk as the next person. We have to tailor our techniques accordingly. I will admit there is some pain experienced when first we massage knots in muscles, but if I hurt more surely the muscle will spasm more as a reflex and therefore, make my work more difficult and time consuming. Not sure what the research is on that. If you have a sports massage with me, let me find the knots and do my job, you don’t question how the mechanic fixes your car or the vet your dog.

Powder here

Just a wee note of warming up and taking care. The powder is here in Les Gets, however, the beginning of the season. A word of warning, even those of you young things, take a moment to warm up those ligaments, knees, hips, backs in order to avoid simple sprains which can put a damper on you holiday. Of course call me, there are many techniques to patch you up if it happens. Also take care, they cut the trees about 30-40 cm above the ground here, so when you are “doing the tree skiing, remember you could hid a stump under the snow, I have had many clients from this and often not pretty, cruciate ligaments or worse! You have been warned.

Massage in France

Hello, to all those following my blog last season, sorry for not replying in Summer, too busy with work.

With this season soon to be upon us, I feel the need to once again to make clear the legislation for physios to work in France.  In fact you cannot work in France as a physio or massage person without; Registration with the Minister de Santé, within the Department in which you will work, French insurances and now a Member of the Ordre of Masseur et Kinésithérapeuts.

I know and understand you are all saying, but its just massage!  The difference in France is that the “metier” profession of massage in France has been historically by physios “kinés”, that has not changed, but over the years France has seen a growth in beauty treatments, who have overlapped their  treatments into relaxing massages etc.  Unfortunately all those who claim massage are not technically legal (although the beauticians here have a diploma/insurance also).

The fairly new Ordre of Masseurs et Kinésitherapeuts, aquivilant to the CSP are now investigating these practices throughout France and starting to formulate litigations to protect massage for the physios.  They have already been in touch with all the legal physios here to make sure we report all those illegally providing massage!

Most of you should know that even a massage could provoke other aches and pains for patients ranging from headaches, neck pain to sciatic symptoms, therefore, I don’t think we should say just a massage.

A final note to those employing illegal physios: are we legal physios no good?  Why do you find the need to employ others, I know of many physios who would be glad of either extra work in winter or like myself provide a Domicilliary service to Chalets/Apartments  or are trying to make ends meet with Cabinets within resorts, why not give us the work.  Perhaps you are too quick not to check within the legally registred systems which already exist.

Note to Clients looking for Physio when on holiday in France

Any people reading this who may find yourself in need of a physio or masseur/eus this winter. Please for the French Registration No. of the person, if they do not have this number, they are not legally working in France and therefore, not insured to treat you (even if a fully quallified physio in Britain). Therefore, if you find you have more neck pain after a massage you have no comeback, its at your own risk.

Companies employing physios in France

To follow on from my last post. All those British companies who are employing British physios or masseurs/eus. Remember the regulations in France are that those people should be fully registered with the Minister de Santé, with an Authorisation de Exercise, then they must be registered within their Department of choice e.g. haute savoie in Annecy, then they must have a minimum of two french insurances, one to cover the client, one to cover the physio (if they do something to be sued for). After all that you could employ the physio. It makes no difference if just massage, a British tax registered company etc etc. Of course I am always available at the above Tel. No.

Physios wanting to work this winter in France

With the snow slowly arriving in Les Gets, just a not to all those physios, either who have jobs with British companies, working in France or who are intending to work on their own this winter. Remember, you will be working illegally, you are not covered by your CSP insurance to work in Europe(unless you are fullly registered in the country, then they will cover you for the firs 6 wks work, until you get your French etc insurances! Working through British companies as an employee is ok for other types of jobs, however, the health profession is subject to other regulations (in order to protect clients), both in France and Britain, imagine the paperwork to work in Britain.
